This is the Tango

Three one hour programs on the history of the Tango by Guadalupe Jolicoeur

In March and April of 1999, Guadalupe Jolicoeur wrote and hosted a radio show for the Canadian Broadcasting Company called This is the Tango. The show ran for 3 weeks, each show 54 minutes long. A couple of years ago I downloaded the Real Audio files of the program from the CBC website. Last week I went searching for the files on the CBC website but was unable to locate them. It appears that they have been removed.

There is a website called Tango Tales Radio. Elmira (the DJ host) has posted This is the Tango in flash format. The web address is: http://www.tangotales.com/archive_voices_and_places/Guadalupe%20Jolicoeur_ThisIsTango.htm

In the interest of anyone wanting to download the files (the original Real Audio, as well as in mp3 format), I decided to post them here.

For a summary of the shows, I'd like to use Elmira's summary from her webpage:

"March 21, 1999 - This Is the Tango - Part One

The tango was once described as a collection of sad thoughts you can dance to. The music is filled with melancholy and desire. This week Guadalupe Jolicouer leads us to the birthplace of the tango to explore this most passionate music.

March 28, 1999 - This Is the Tango - Part Two

It's been 50 years since the golden age of the tango drove people to the dance floors of Paris and Buenos Aires. But this week you'll want to grab a long-stemmed rose because the music, the fashion, and the passion of the tango return.

April 4, 1999 - This Is the Tango - Part Three

The final episode of This Is the Tango is a survey of the tango's role in the 20th century, with a special focus on the music of the extraordinary composer Astor Piazzolla."

Please visit Elmira's Tango Tales Radio. Lots of good stuff!

Thank you Louisa Alix from New Zealand for pointing out to me the defective mp3 file (This is the Tango Part 2). Hopefully it's fixed.

(Don't forget to right click and save target as to download.)

The Real Audio files are 16kbps. You'll need Real Player to play them. It's a free download from their website. Look for the FREE player. The real audio files I then converted into AIFF files and then converted into mp3s, compressed to 64 kbps.

I do have the AIFF files (which can be burned to play on a CD player) as well as mp3s at a bit rate of 320 kbps. I'll burn them to a CD if you request them. I can also email them to you (but be warned, the files are huge: 545 Mb (AIFF) and 123 Mb (320 kbps mp3). Your mail server is likely to reject them.
